…mi tema…
during my week at truth, i worked with an organization called el centro de las tres mañuelas, which assists women and children who are victims of domestic violence and/or sexual abuse.
on tuesday, i met sara “sarita” araujo. sarita and her husband, mario, have been married for thirty four years, but three years ago sarita decided that she had put up with enough of mario’s increasing abusive behavior. sarita filed for a denuncie (separation) and mario was removed from the home. it was during this time that sarita learned of tres mañuelas, where she seeks legal and psychological help. during my time with her, sarita repeatedly praised the center and how they have been a huge support throughout her difficult transition.
since the separation, sarita has been living with two of her three sons, one of which was born physically and mentally disabled. this son, esteban, is 32 years old and requires constant attention. this is the family that i would spend the next three days documenting. the following images are some of the results of our time together…
